According to the legends, Mursal tea is found on the slopes of Mursalitsa peak in the Rhodopes, where the mythical Rhodope singer Orpheus once passed. The herb grows where Orpheus’ tears fell when he was looking for his beloved forest nymph, Eurydice. Thus, in place of his hot tears, one of the most healing plants known in our lands has appeared. Mursal tea is also called Pirin tea, Mountain tea, Alibotushki tea, and Sharplanina tea. The best way to find your way around is to ask for its Latin name which is Sideritis Scardica. Mursal tea is a perennial plant that is found in the higher parts above the Rhodope villages or on the rich limestone rocks.
Cultivated Mursal tea is grown for more than 15 years in the vicinity of Trigrad, in limestone soil at 1400 meters above sea level. The plant also is cultivated and it grows in the fields near the Rhodopean village of Momchilovtsi. One of the most important conditions is that the land should be clean and the altitude has to be high. The seedlings must be prepared in advance because the plant grows very slowly in the beginning and it requires more care such as weeding and regular watering. Cultivated tea is grown in humus-rich carbonate soils.
